Debra Anderson becomes a Home Owner

On August 10, 2009 Debra Anderson became the newest family to purchase a Fayette County Habitat Home. She moves into a home that is built by volunteers, tradesmen and professionals. We wish to thank everyone that help bring this happy chain of events together.

Pictured below is Debra with the Fayette County Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors and Team Members along with Angela Beck who graciously donated her legal work to officially transfer ownership to Debra.

Our deepest appreciation goes to the Hostyn Catholic Men for their continued support. The photos below are just a sampling of the work they did on the Anderson home in Schulenberg.  Not only did they commit every single Thursday to work on the home, but they did so in a spirit of brotherhood, joy and good will.

CenterPoint Energy recently donated the extension of a gas line to the Fayette County Habitat for Humanity house located in Schulenburg. Fayette County Habitat decided a gas furnace and gas appliances would be most efficient for the homeowners. CenterPoint normally provides the customer with the first 100 feet of the gas line at no charge, unfortunately, the main gas line stopped 430 feet from the house.

First Two Open Saturdays on the Schulenberg Project off to a Great Start

Work continued on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday schedule. The first two open Saturdays, January 17 and January 24, 2009, had volunteer crews work with Construction Leader Tom Elliot to get a lot of work done.

Pictured below are the January 17 workers. They are Alan Herzik, Caye McMaster, Debra Anderson and Tom Elliot.  Patrick Caballero was on hand to help and was behind the camera. We did some site cleanup, installed the attic access stairway and began to paint the exterior.

Pictured above is Ninfa Lopez and Nataline Beran. They both gave a hand on Saturday, January 24, 2009. They had fun sealing all the joints and around the electrical wiring to help make the home energy efficient. In addition, the rest of the crew enclosed the water heater closet and fabricated some of the finished window trim.

We have a new work schedule for our Schulenberg home project beginning now until early March 2009

Construction Leader Tom Elliott will be leading volunteers 3 days a week

If you have been waiting for Saturdays to be available, then this is your chance to help!

We will be working every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM.

We're finishing the exterior siding.  Then will be caulking and painting the exterior.  Hanging the interior sheetrock will be next.

On Sunday, September 14th, 2008, Fayette County Habitat for Humanity celebrated the start of construction of its second home. A foundation blessing took place at 1210 Babylon Lane in Schulenburg, which is the construction site for the home that will be built in partnership with Debra Sue Anderson and her three sons, Taheer, Salah, and Naeem.

Speakers at the foundation blessing included Pastor Nelson (the Anderson family’s pastor), Fayette County Judge Ed Janecka, Schulenburg Mayor Roger Moellenberndt, Schulenburg Superintendant of Schools Dale Pitts, Fayette County Habitat for Humanity (FCHfH) chaplain Rev. Clarence Oestreich, FCHfH board president Kristin Albers Laam, and FCHfH construction project manager Ed Collins. Toward the end of the ceremony, Debra Sue Anderson presented her family bible to Ed Collins, who will place it on the dirt and rebar portion of the foundation just before the concrete slab is poured next week.

The weather was beautiful on Sunday. As the crowd gathered to celebrate the foundation of a Habitat for Humanity home and the positive impact the new home will have on the community, they also paused to remember neighboring Texans whose homes had been devastated a day earlier by Hurricane Ike.

FCHfH still needs skilled individuals to take on roles as additional site supervisor, materials manager, and assistant to the project manager. Volunteers for framing crews are needed to begin framing at the end of September. Register to volunteer at www.fayettehabiatnow.org or by calling volunteer coordinator Jeaton Smith at 979-218-9420.
